Mortgage SEO Keywords

The first step of any SEO campaign is to determine what keywords you want to optimize your website for.  It is recommended that you spend plenty of time researching keywords, as this is the entire foundation of your SEO campaign.

With such a vast amount of potential mortgage keywords, it is important to be strategic in what you target.  By targeting the right keywords, you can maximize the results of your efforts, and avoid spending too time on overly competitive keywords that will take a long time to rank for.

There are several factors to consider when determining what keywords to include in your SEO campaign.  For starters, you will want to select the keywords that best represent your loan products/programs.  In addition to identifying all the potential keywords for your loan programs, you will then want to research the search volumes and overall competitiveness of each keyword.

How to Research Keywords

There are several methods by which you can research keywords to target.  This includes using keyword research tools (which can help you find out the estimated search volumes of keywords).  You may also find keywords by viewing suggested and related search terms by entering keywords directly on the search engines.

Below are the most common methods of conducting keyword research:

Google Search / Suggested Searches:

One of the most simple and productive methods of finding new keywords is to simply start searching keywords into Google, and look at the suggested searches that appear below.

In addition to the suggested searches that appear below the search box, you should also view the related searches (keywords) at the bottom of the results page.  This can provide another great source of keyword ideas.

All of the above methods are an excellent way to discover new keywords, as well as finding “long-tail keywords” that are related to a primary keyword.

Long-Tail Keywords

We advise that you refrain from targeting what are known as “short tail keywords”, at least not to begin with.  This would include search terms like “home loans”, “conventional loans”, “FHA loans”, “refinance mortgage”, or “cash out refinance”, just to provide you with a few examples.  Instead, we recommend that you target “long tail keywords” which are search terms with 3 or more words.

Below are examples of long tail keywords:

Example 1:

Instead of targeting the keywords “cash out refinance”, you may want to consider targeting search terms like: “cash out refinance to pay off debt”, “FHA cash out refinance requirements”, and “cash out refinance to buy a second home”.  While these types of keywords are not individually searched in large volumes, you can more easily produce SEO rankings for these search terms, and collectively they will produce a lot of traffic.

Example 2:

(Create a better example here) Instead of targeting the keywords “FHA loans”, you may want to consider targeting search terms like: “your location + FHA loans” (which could be “California FHA loans”, “Texas FHA loans”, or “Colorado FHA loans”, depending on what locations you serve).  Some more examples are:  “FHA loan credit requirements”, “FHA loans for condos”, and “FHA loans for teachers”.  These are just random examples of some long tail keywords, which you can more efficiently achieve SEO rankings for.  Then, overtime, as your website gains authority, it will be more feasible for you to eventually rank for competitive, short-tail keywords like “FHA loans”.

Niche Keywords 

With some due diligence, and perhaps even a little bit of luck, you may be able to find some niche keywords that can be a gold mine of leads once your website ranks for such keywords.  These niches will often result in significant volumes of traffic, and with only minimum effort needed to achieve top SEO rankings.  Therefore, we highly recommend that you take plenty of time to thoroughly research of all the keywords that you can potentially target, and hopefully you will be able to find as many valuable niches as possible.
